VILLAGE DONKEYS IN SOUTH EAST CRETE

The village of Malles is in the foothills of the Dikte mountains and is a traditional village in the real sense of the word. The nearest towns are Ierapetra and Viannos.

Whilst 'most people' now drive large trucks there are still a number who don't. Whilst researching for the G.A.W.F. visit we gathered a list of 30 donkeys who are still worked in this village of maybe 600 residents. We were pleased that 14 of these donkey owners benefitted from the visit by the vet and farrier, but would like to be able to extend this in future.

We would like to be able to contribute the the cost of this vital service that the Greek Animal Welfare provide and would like to ask for any help you can give.

FOOT PROBLEMS

This donkey was walking on the front wall of its' hoof. It was in a lot of pain and the owner was still riding her to the fields.

A common problem with donkeys here as the owners do not have access to farriers and do not know what to do for their donkeys. Some owners try a DIY job and this often leads to dreadful conditions.

After treatment from an experienced farrier courtesy of GAWF this donkey was able to walk in a more normal way. We are monitoring its progress.

More pictures of overgrown feet

As you can see, the farrier has already cut some of this 'turkish slipper' off the hoof

This donkey from the village of Malles had been treated the year before for overgrown hooves. This shows how quickly the hoof can grow and how important it is to have frequent visits from a farrier. Note the way the donkey is tethered and the rope burn marks.
